Chapter Sixteen
The After
He was infinite.
The world was vast, but he was bigger. Every cell, down to the last atom of his being was alive, truly alive, for the first time in his life. He had no body, no face, not even a name. It all seemed so trivial now. Those things had been tethers, keeping him restrained to mediocrity. The ropes that once bound him were no more and in death he was irrevocably freed.
Though there was sadness, albeit a small seed planted deep within. In his previous life, for he was now awoken and living anew, there had been...something he cared deeply for. A place? A person? He could not remember, each time he thought a memory surfaced, it vanished before fully taking shape. Leaving him with pangs of longing and sadness, which were at odds with his new reality.
Since death, he grew beyond mortal feelings and reasoning. In many ways he was enlightened and found matters of the heart a terrible nuisance humans seemed so very fond of. It was a shame that most of life was spent in heartbreak or melancholy when there were far better things to experience. Death was the true start of life, everything before was a place of limbo. Somewhere people stayed until they were chosen for greatness.
Just as he was.
The soft kiss of oblivion tempted to lure him deeper into her black abyss. Relaxing, he no longer wanted to fight the uncertainty awaiting him at the end of his journey. He expected eternal peace.
What he got was pain.
White hot pain seared through the body he was brought back into. It hurt...a lot. Being trampled by a dozen horses would have been the kinder alternative. What cruelty was this? To bring him back to this state where all he felt was pain.
"Finian?" A voice murmured. It sounded miles away and unfamiliar. It occurred to him that the voice was speaking to him. He was Finian, and someone wanted him to respond.
Unfortunately, Finian's tongue felt like lead in his mouth. Could the voice not register the pain he was currently feeling? Even breathing hurt, making him pant in shallow breaths.
A hand moved to his chest and sent a powerful jolt through him. Finian screamed loudly, the pain becoming all consuming. At any minute his body would catch on fire; surely this is what it felt like to be burning alive. Just when he thought the pain would overtake him entirely, the hand on his chest pulled away and with it, the pain.
"I'm sorry about that." The voice spoke, sounding familiar though he could not place it. "It was essential to save your life. I'm sure you'll find a way to forgive me."
Finian finally recognized the speaker. This was the second time he heard the voice outside his dreams. He was still unable to open his eyes, let alone move, to see if the man's face was as arrogant as Finian suspected it to be.
"The pain will go away, though you will be sore for a few days.
